Speaker bio:

Dr. Victor D. Rosenthal is a medical doctor who specializes in internal medicine and infectious diseases. He holds a PhD in epidemiology and has 31 years of experience. His primary areas of focus are epidemiology, the prevention and control of healthcare-associated infections (HAIs), patient safety, and the development of online platforms for HAI surveillance.

He is a Research Associate Professor at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine; he provides consultation on infection prevention at Jackson Memorial Hospital and is advisor to medical students. He is also the Founder and Chief Scientific Officer of the International Nosocomial Infection Control Consortium, an organization dedicated to HAI research in low-and middle-income countries.

He has led research efforts involving 2,500 healthcare workers. He has 393 scientific publications and book chapters, has been cited 18,000 times and holds an H-index of 63. Dr. Rosenthal has received recognition through ten major international awards for research excellence. He serves as an Editorial Board Member and peer-reviewer for over 100 scientific, peer-reviewed journals, including Lancet and others.

Dr. Rosenthal is a paid consultant of Teleflex.

Presentation objectives and synopsis:

Infection reduction and colonization reduction are often discussed in conjunction with one another. Healthcare organizations and infection prevention teams have shifted their focus on reducing hospital acquired condition rates to include central line associated bloodstream infections (or CLABSI). How often is there a focus on reducing colonization, whether it be an area on the body, or on the surface of a medical device? Does the ability to reduce colonization have the potential to improve patient outcomes? This lecture will explore risk reduction as it pertains to colonization reduction.

Learning Objectives:

- Define colonization

- Discuss routes of colonization

- Review common organisms associated with colonization

- Discuss risk factors for CLABSI

- Identify methods to reduce risk for CLABSI

Attendees will be required to register with the free Teleflex Academy education site prior to the lecture in order to obtain the CEU.

BAPIC meeting

For our March meeting, our guest speaker will be Maureen Spencer, M.Ed, BSN, RN, CIC, FAPIC.

Please read below for more information regarding her presentation, Ultrasound Infection Prevention: Disinfection of Probes Used in Percutaneous Procedures.

Program Description

Ultrasound imaging technology is currently used for more clinical applications than any other imaging modality with procedures ranging from radiology and cardiology to endocrinology and women’s health.  By today’s count, ultrasound guidance is used in approximately 140 different percutaneous procedures ranging from injections on healthy, intact skin to breast and liver biopsies where variation in provider skill and technique may put patients at risk for infection. For busy infection preventionists who do not have time to conduct a risk assessment or first-hand observation, understanding the diversity of procedures, the potential for deviation from clinical best practice, and how patients may be put at risk can be challenging.  Proper application of the Spaulding Classification System and relevant standards and guidelines to support reprocessing policy adds yet another layer of complexity.  As procedural types and locations proliferate, those responsible for managing infection risk and meeting accreditation requirements for ultrasound-guided procedures will face an increasingly arduous challenge.

Highlights of this one-hour program include:

  • Critical differences in percutaneous procedures by degree of risk,

  • Discussion of relevant probe reprocessing standards and regulatory requirements,

  • Review and application of the Spaulding Classification system,

  • Lessons learned from a system-wide risk assessment of ultrasound guided percutaneous procedures and reprocessing practice (sample risk assessment included) and,

  • Considerations for ensuring safety, reliability and compliance across the continuum of care.

 Learning Objectives

  •  Characterize the range of percutaneous procedures,

  • Explain the implications of risk assessment findings to patient safety,

  • Discuss the significance of available evidence demonstrating contact between the ultrasound probe and sterile needle or puncture site,

  • Determine reprocessing requirements for probes, used in a key group of percutaneous procedures, by applying the Spaulding Classification and relevant regulatory requirements, standards and guidelines.

Duration: 1 hour

CEUs:  This one-hour program has been approved for 1.2 contact hours.
